Tips for Preventing Teen Related Car Accidents on Prom Night

While June marks the beginning of summer, for our teenage high school seniors it marks the end of one chapter of their lives and the beginning of the next. For them, May and June are about getting ready to celebrate graduation and prom night. Our young adults are eager to celebrate these milestones in their lives. Unfortunately, this time of year also marks the highest rate of teen traffic related fatalities. Auto accidents pose the biggest danger for teens on prom and graduation night and are usually related to alcohol-impaired driving, being tired, or simply being distracted by either SMS messages on their mobile device or their friends that may be along for the ride.

Here is a very scary fact:

Did you know that the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) reports that in the U.S., the fatal crash rate per mile driven for 16-19 year olds is nearly 3 times the rate for drivers ages 20 and over. Additionally, the fatal crash rate per mile driven is nearly twice as high for 16-17 year olds as it is for 18-19 year olds. While we would like to think that our young adults will not give in to peer pressure and consume alcohol on prom night, according to statistics provided by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), car crashes are the leading cause of death for teens as a result of underage drinking drivers.

Recommendations to Help Keep Our Teens Safe from Car Accidents:

  1. Always wear a seat belt
  2. Respect the speed limit
  3. Talk to your children about these statistics. They should know the potential dangers of distracted driving and drinking and driving particularly during prom night.
  4. Arrange to drive them to and from the event or hire a chauffeured ride on their special night.

While our young adult drivers know what to do, it does not hurt to reiterate the rules of the road including:

– Avoid alcohol if they are going to drive and to definitely not get into a car with a driver that is under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
– Define the level of communication you require for checking in during and after prom as well as the post graduation party plans and location.

Prom and graduation mark an unforgettable milestone in the lives of our young adults. Let’s make sure we keep them safe, while they are creating unforgettable memories.
