Motorcycle Accidents in 2022

What You Can Do To Prevent Motorcycle Accidents

Motorcycles are frequently found on our roads, especially during the warmer months of the year. With the high price of fuel, it isn’t surprising that the number of motorcycle riders out there is significantly on the rise. It’s everyone’s job to do all they can to prevent motorcycle accidents from happening.

What can you do while you are on the road to Prevent Accidents?

For motorcycle riders, the answer starts with being responsible. Make sure that you always wear the proper safety equipment. Don’t exceed the posted speed limit or ride your bike in adverse weather conditions. If you aren’t confident of your riding abilities then don’t take that motorcycle onto a street that is busy or onto a highway or interstate. Doing so will only put yourself and others at risk of an accident. Always make sure everything on the motorcycle is in excellent working condition and that you can safely reach all of the necessary controls on the bike.

Drinking and driving are not acceptable for anyone behind the wheel of a vehicle, and that includes a motorcycle. Unfortunately, there are numerous motorcycle accidents that involve the bike operator consuming alcohol. Motorcycle operators have the responsibility of watching all the other vehicles on the road. Many vehicle operators don’t stop to consider a motorcycle may be behind them or in a blind spot. You always have to be on top of such issues as you are riding. Make sure your motorcycle has everything it needs to be operational at night. This includes a working headlight.

Motor vehicle operators need to become more aware of the potential that a motorcycle may be in the back of them or trying to pass them. They easily fit into a mirror’s blind spot so take the time to look before you make any moves. Always use your signal lights so that the motorcyclist can be watching what your actions will be as well.

It doesn’t matter if you are a new motorcycle rider or someone with years of experience, being involved in an accident can happen at any time. While it is impossible to eliminate every type of hazard, you can do your part to ensure your riding adventures are as safe as possible. For those who operate motor vehicles, keep in mind that you are sharing the road with motorcycles and pay extra attention to their whereabouts. Working together we can help limit motorcycle accidents and motor vehicle accidents.

What About Motorcycle Insurance Laws

In many states, it is mandatory to have insurance on your motorcycle. Motorcyclists in New York are required to have minimum liability insurance. Under New York law, only motorcycle liability insurance is considered necessary. Liability coverage pays to reimburse other drivers for medical costs and the replacement of property lost in an accident. It also provides you with coverage to defend against lawsuits if you seriously injure another person in a NY motorcycle accident or motorcycle crash in NY due to your negligence.

Below are the 3 minimum liability coverage’s that every motorcycle policy must have:

  • For Injuries to a Single Individual: $25,000;
  • For Injuries to all Parties in a single event: $50,000;
  • For Property Damages: $10,000 or the 25/50/10 policy.

Let me start out by saying that as a Bronx Motorcycle Accident Lawyer, I feel it is unfortunate that, unlike a regular motor vehicle policy, a motorcycle policy in New York does not have No-Fault insurance coverage.  Because of this, unless you have private insurance, you may not have coverage to pay for your medical care, treatment, and bills if you are hurt in an accident.

No-Fault insurance coverage for a motor vehicle pays for medical treatment, other expenses, and lost wages for a person injured during the use and/or operation of a car. While No-Fault benefits are usually paid because of a car accident, they can also be paid for an accident-related injury caused while using a car, such as while getting into or out of a parked car. New York State law requires minimum No-Fault coverage of $50,000 for a motor vehicle.

Some motorcyclists think that they can receive No-Fault insurance coverage benefits when they are injured in a motorcycle accident. However, No-Fault insurance does not provide coverage for the motorcycle driver or any passenger. Fortunately, there is No-Fault coverage if your motorcycle strikes and injures a pedestrian. That is why No-Fault is listed on a motorcycle policy.

Due to heavy traffic and the increased risk of motorcycle accident-related injuries and property damage, the cost of motorcycle insurance in New York City is unusually high. In fact, many companies don’t even offer it. All of the same factors that determine premiums apply to motorcycle insurance, but the greater risk leads to greater cost. It is extremely difficult to determine the average cost of motorcycle insurance in New York.

Having motorcycle insurance is a requirement under New York State law. It would be a good idea to do your research and obtain the best coverage that you can afford. While operating any type of motor vehicle comes with a risk, you can help lower the financial risk involved in operating one by covering the cost of damages and potential liability lawsuits should you be involved in an accident.
