The golf course was built by the Parks Department under the direction of Robert Moses, the commissioner of the New York Parks Department for three decades. Moses saw golf as a way to provide recreation and a recreational outlet for residents. His efforts were rewarded when the golf course was renamed Pelham Golf Course.
