How to Stay Focused While Driving

There is much more to driving than knowing how to operate a car. You may drive on the Henry Hudson Pkwy or I-87 every day, but driving can still be dangerous. Throughout Riverdale, Yonkers, and surrounding areas, distracted driving is a common cause of car accidents.

You can reduce your risk of an accident by never engaging in distracted driving. You can pay attention to your surroundings and stay focused on the road.

Tips to Improve Focus While Driving

  • Secure items in your car. You do not need to be taking a road trip out of state as the majority of car accidents occur near home. Use the glove compartment for small items, and pack your groceries in the trunk of your car. You can use a container to hold items such as toys, snacks, and school books. You do not want loose items to roll around in the car while you drive, especially after grocery shopping or picking up your children after school.
  • Tend to personal grooming at home. When you are behind the wheel, it is not the time to comb your hair, shave, or apply cosmetics. Take time at home for these activities. If you need to neaten your appearance, wait until you reach your destination.
  • Prepare your mirrors. Your mirrors should be checked and adjusted before you start your car. This is especially important if someone else drives your car. Make sure you have clear visibility to decrease your risk of getting into a car crash on the roads of New York.
  • Avoid mental distractions. Emotional or stressful conversations can result in a car accident. If you are arguing with your spouse or child, it is a form of distracted driving. You cannot fully focus on your driving because you are focused on the argument or a stressful topic. If the conversation cannot wait until you arrive at your destination, park your car in a safe area to discuss it.
  • Make sure important items are accessible. You do not want to reach for, or search for, items while you are driving. From maps to snacks, prepare these items before you start your car. This tip applies to passengers, too. Everything you and your passengers need for the trip should be easy to reach.
  • Do not use your cell phone. It is against the law to use a hand-held cell phone while driving. Vehicle and Traffic Law Section 1225c has been in effect since December 1, 2001. While cell phone use may result in a fine up to $200, it can also cause a serious accident. The sensible approach is to keep your phone in the glove compartment while you drive. If a call cannot wait until you reach your destination, pull the car over and park before using the phone.
