Announcing Vehicle Safety Week in New York State
For the first time, the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles has announced a Vehicle Safety Week in New York State during the week of May 22-29, 2017, drawing the attention of motorists’ to make sure their cars are safe for the upcoming summer driving season.
During the last week of May 2017, motorists are encouraged to check tire pressure, fluids, battery life, and other safety measures to make sure their vehicles are ready for summer travel.
Motorists should check https://safercar.gov for information on recalls that could affect their vehicles to ensure all fixes are complete before driving. The Department of Motor Vehicles and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee recently produced a video highlighting the importance of the website in finding important recall information.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there are over 10,000 crashes every year as a result of faulty tires alone. Did you know that almost 200 people die every year nationwide in crashes where improperly inflated tires were a factor?
It’s better to be safe than sorry and we join DMV in recommending you visit safercar.gov to see what recalls are in effect, and if your vehicle is affected so you can quickly identify what needs to be done. You can even sign up for alerts for any future recalls that might affect your car, SUV or pickup truck.
In the hot summer weather you want to be sure your cooling systems are working well to avoid overheating both for the car itself and for the people inside it; check your windshield wipers are not worn, and also make sure that you have enough wiper fluid to keep your windshield clean.
Whether you’re spending a day at Yankee Stadium, or planning a trip to Jones Beach, every New Yorker is urged to make sure their vehicles are as safe as they are.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there are 11,000 crashes every year as a result of faulty tires alone including 200 fatalities. The website safercar.gov details what recalls are in effect for vehicles so that motorists can quickly get them repaired or parts replaced.
We join with the Governor in wanting all New Yorkers’ vacations to be memorable for the right reasons, not an easily preventable accident.
Be prepared. Be safe. Have fun. Let the summer begin!
